Are you contemplating scrapping your older Win10 laptop? If so, read this first.
A couple of years ago, I upgraded my 10-year-old Windows 7 laptop to MS Windows 10.
That was a mistake.
I now owned an electric 'brick'; long boot-up times, constant updates, short battery life, and terrible video streaming.
Since I'm on a tight budget and I don't need a laptop for heavy-duty work (I use my desktop for that), I started looking at Chromebooks as a good alternative.
But what about my old one? There's nothing physically wrong with it and the existing specs are better than some Chromebooks.
Then I found how to convert my laptop into a Chromebook with a Chromium Operating system for next to nothing in cost.
It was worth a try. But, just to play it safe, I pulled the 1TB. hard drive (HDD) and replaced it with a new solid-state drive (SSD). That way, if anything went wrong, I could reinstall the old HDD and I'm back to where I started. Yes, SSD's are more expensive than HDD's but a Chromebook doesn't require all that space, so a 500GB was just fine and cheap enough.
Well, I am impressed.
It took me, with my limited skills, about an hour to complete and the performance is beyond my expectations.
Don't get me wrong, a Chromebook is not for everyone. But, it is worth the time to investigate the pros and cons before you decide to scrap a perfectly good laptop or PC.
